Want to work for a local, friendly hospitality business?

The Angel Inn, Topcliffe, is a new dining and events venue with rooms – since the purchase of the 18th century coaching inn in early 2023 from West Park Inns by Maggie and Dave Mathews, the vision to create a welcoming and luxurious space with a great bar, a restaurant serving innovative and exciting menus and welcoming hotel and events rooms is now coming to life….

In coming to work at The Angel, you would become part of a close knit and dedicated team headed up by Dave, our Executive Chef. Dave was brought up in Whitby, which inspired his ongoing love of dishes featuring seafood. He was classically trained in the techniques of the great French chef Escoffier and continues to follow these classic techniques with his own modern twists, delivering the innovative and delicious menus you can see today.

Maggie, our Managing Director, has a background in hospitality, working in many different establishments in Yorkshire and even at the Angel, starting when she was still at school – embedding a lifelong love of delivering excellence in the hospitality industry.

Maggie and Dave met at the Angel in 1995, going on to manage and run a number of pubs in the local area and the rest is history….

How do we work around here?

We take pride in how we look after our guests – in our food service, in how we deliver a great night in our hotel rooms and of course, how we work with brides and bridegrooms and their families and guests to ensure memorable and unforgettable events. None of this is possible without our hard working and dedicated team and to help to guide us we have a set of core values that we all work to:

  • An outstanding safe environment with all employees committed to learning and understanding the safety measures that surround the working area and hotel – and choosing never to walk away from anything believed to be a cause for concern

  • The best guest experience – knowing our job and knowing how to make guest interactions special will help to make every guest want to return to The Angel

  • Proud to be An Angel – we take pride in ourselves, and our service and are passionate to deliver for our guests – and if anything isn’t right, we take real pride in putting any issues right.

  • Doing what we do really well – I make sure that I aim to get things done “right first time”.

In addition to this, we believe that hospitality is a fantastic place to work and creates amazing careers, as you will see from some of our case studies below… – to support this we have partnered with The Burnt Chef project, a charity that support good working practices in the hospitality industry and is our charity of choice.

We work in small teams and how we communicate with each other is key to helping us develop as a business – our colleagues are the ones who have the great ideas, the ways that we can improve what we do and how we do it to delight our guests in every part of the business….. to make sure that we do this effectively, we have several two way communication methods.. monthly, we hold a meeting for every colleague to come and hear about the business, to share ideas and to celebrate our Angel of the Month and also to have some fun! In addition to this, our team leaders hold regular quick update sessions to make sure everyone has the knowledge they need to do a great job.

We are serious about development around here and we are currently running a Chef apprenticeship programme. All our new starters are fully trained, using a combination of online E Learning which is accredited nationally – for example, Food Hygiene Levels 2 and 3, and also through a comprehensive, role driven training programme. This training means that all our colleagues can truly live our values to ensure the best guest experience, wherever they are in the Angel. We believe that flexibility is key to ensuring our teams work well together and actively train to ensure that our colleagues a flexible and multiskilled across different areas if The Angel. As we grow our business, we will be looking for talented individuals who we can develop either through external programmes or internally, to support across all areas.

In addition to working in a friendly, team business, what else do we offer? All colleagues who start with us can benefit from being part of an employee assistance programme run by BUPA, discount on food in our food service areas, paid breaks, increased holiday entitlement through service points, free meals if working over 5 hour shifts, flexible working hours available and more… We also benefit from having a self-contained house next to The Angel which houses our colleague accommodation if this is needed. All of this in addition to excellent rates of pay for all roles.
